Row 2 and all succ. rows: work the stitches as they are.

Rib st. with diagonal plaits: work over 8 sts. + 7.

Row 1: 1 purled st. , * 2 crossed sts. leftwise (= work the 2nd knitted st. passing the right hand knitting needle behind the 1st stitch and, without slipping the sts. off the knitting needle, work. the first stitch in knitted st), 3 knitted sts., 3 purled sts. *. Repeat from * to *, 2 crossed sts. leftwise, 3 knitted sts., 1 purled st.

Row 2 and all succ. even rows: work the stitches as they are.

Row 3: 1 purled st. , * 1 knitted st.., 2 crossed sts. leftwise, 2 knitted sts., 3 purled sts. *. Repeat from * to *, 1 knitted st., 2 crossed sts. leftwise, 2 knitted sts., 1 purled st.

WORKING INSTRUCTIONS

Back: Cast on 55 sts. with knitting needles No. 9 and the yarn, work in ribbed st. 5/3. When work measures 48 cm., equivalent to 58 rows, to shape the sleeve holes cross off at the sides 3 sts. every 2 rows twice. When work measures 22 cm. from beg. of sleeve holes, equivalent to 26 rows, to slant shoulders cross off at the sides, every 2 rows, 4 sts. twice., 3 sts. At the same time, at 4 rows from beg. of the slant of the neckline cross off the 21 centre sts and cont. Work. the two parts separately.

Front: Cast on the stitches and work to match back until work measures 10 cm., equivalent to 12 rows. Cont. over all the sts. in rib st. with diagonal plaits for 20 cm., equivalent to 24 rows, cont. over all the sts. in ribbed st. 5/3. When work measures 48 cm., equivalent to 58 rows, shape the sleeve holes as for the back. When work measures 65 cm., equivalent to 78 rows, from the neckline cross off the 9 centre sts. and cont. working the two parts separately; cross off centrewise, every 2 rows, 2 sts. 1 st. 4 times. At the same time, when work measures 70 cm., equivalent to 84 rows, slant the shoulders as for the back.

Sleeves: Cast on 25 m. with knitting needles No. 9 and yarn; work in ribbed st. 5/3. At the sides inc. 1 st. every 8 rows 8 times. and work in ribbed st. 5/3 on these new stitches as well. When work measures 65 cm., equivalent to 78 rows, to shape the sleeve holes cross off at the sides 3 sts. every 2 rows twice. Cross off in one time the remaining 29 sts.

MAKING UP AND FINISH

Sew one of the shoulders. With knitting needles No. 9 and the yarn pick up 47 sts. around the neckline working in ribbed st. 5/3 for 13 cm., equivalent to 16 rows; bind off all the sts.. Sew the other shoulder and the sides of the neck. Sew in the sleeves. Sew the sides. Sew the undersleeves remembering that the cuffs must be turned up for 8 cm.
